Kurseong girl Jagriti Rai, gets artificial leg after train accident in Kurseong, Darjeeling. In a heart-touching story of compassion and community support, Aawaz Social Welfare Organization has successfully arranged a high-quality artificial limb (prosthetic leg) for 22-year-old Jagriti Rai of Bhanu Tole, Naya Bazar, Kurseong, who tragically lost her right foot in a train accident earlier this year.
Jagriti Rai Loses Foot in Tragic Train Accident
The unfortunate incident occurred in January 2025 when Jagriti, daughter of Sri Kiran Rai, was boarding a train bound for Kolkata. While attempting to board a moving train, she slipped and fell onto the tracks, resulting in the instantaneous amputation of her right foot. The family rushed her to the nearest hospital, where her life was saved but she was left permanently disabled.
For months, Jagriti and her family struggled with the physical, emotional, and financial burden of the tragedy. Coming from a modest background, the cost of a good-quality prosthetic limb (over ₹80,000–₹1,00,000) was far beyond their reach.
In March 2025, the family approached Aawaz Social Welfare Organization, a trusted local NGO known for helping underprivileged residents of Kurseong subdivision in times of crisis. After verifying the case and understanding the urgency, Aawaz immediately swung into action.
Working in close collaboration with the Marwari Sewa Association, Kurseong – a philanthropic organization with decades of experience in providing medical aid – Aawaz arranged complete funding, measurement, fabrication, fitting, and physiotherapy support for Jagriti’s prosthetic limb.

The artificial leg was fitted in November 2025 at a reputed prosthetic centre, and after a short period of gait training and rehabilitation, Jagriti is now able to walk confidently again.
“I never thought I would walk properly again. Thanks to Aawaz NGO and Marwari Sewa Association, I have got my life back. I can now go to the market, help my mother at home, and dream of continuing my studies,” said an emotional Jagriti Rai while speaking to local reporters.
Her father, Sri Kiran Rai, added, “We had lost all hope. Aawaz did not just give my daughter an artificial leg – they gave her dignity and a future. We will remain grateful to them forever.”
The entire cost of the prosthetic limb, transportation, accommodation during fitting sessions, and follow-up care was fully sponsored through donations and CSR support mobilized by the two organizations.
This is not the first time Aawaz Social Welfare Organization has stepped in to help accident victims and differently-abled persons in the Kurseong hills. In the past three years alone, the NGO has facilitated artificial limbs, wheelchairs, hearing aids, and calipers for more than 10 needy individuals across the subdivision.
“We believe no one should lose hope because of financial constraints. If we can bring back someone’s smile and independence, that is the biggest reward for us,” said a senior member of Aawaz Social Welfare Organization.
Jagriti has now become an inspiration in her neighbourhood, encouraging others to never give up and to seek help when needed.
